Will LED Lighting Overtake All Lighting Types?

In the past several years LED technology seems to have taken over the sign and lighting industries. And in most cases, that is completely true. The advantages of LED lightings and the improvements are undeniable. We see LED lighting becoming the choice of parking lots, roadways, automobiles, retail stores, office settings, all types of electronics, performing arts venues, households, and signage.

So, the question everyone seems to be wondering is, will LED lighting overtake all types of lighting that currently exists? Our experience the past few years seems to indicate that yes, this is inevitable and LED lighting continues to evolve. At some point in the future LED will expand to such a point, that it will be the only type of lighting available. Or at least to such an extent, that other types of lighting will be very hard to find. And as demand for “older” types of lighting decrease, the cost for these will increase. It’s simple supply and demand.

In the sign lighting business LED has totally replaced florescent lighting for new product, and retrofits and conversions from florescent to LED continue to become more popular as cost for LED products decrease in cost and the cost and of florescent lamps and ballasts increase as their availability decrease.

LED has also made so significant inroads to replacing neon in some applications. Back thirty years ago neon made a spectacular resurgence. The nostalgic and unique look of neon along with the variety of color options available could not be matched. Let’s face it, neon was, and is cool. However, as LED replacement products for neon continue to be perfected, the demand for neon also continues to decrease. Making neon and the related parts required to manufacture more expensive and less obtainable.

As these “older” lighting options become harder to find and the maintenance parts become less available, PartsForSigns.com will continue to be your source for these parts at the most competitive prices.

Neon Sign Basics from PartsForSigns.com | Part 1

Today’s modern neon sign parts are a long way from Paris, but the history of this form of lighting started with French engineer Georges Claude (b. Sept. 24, 1870, d. May  23, 1960) in 1910.   In 1897, he realized that dissolving acetylene gas into acetone would stabilize it enough to move it safely. Eventually, he realized that inert gasses would conduct electricity and produce light when currents were run through them! It was in December of 1910 that he showed the world in the first public display of a neon lamp.  His immediate intention was to use them in signs and lighting and they would soon be dubbed liquid fire.  Understandably, people would stop and stare at the spectacle for hours and it's fate for use in signs and advertising was sealed.

More than a century later, PartsForSigns.com can supply parts you would need to repair a neon sign from transformers and power supplies to GTO wire and housings. How to Save Money and Time By Retrofitting Your Fluorescent or Neon Sign to LED

How to Save Money and Time By Retrofitting Your Fluorescent or Neon Sign to LED

The world is full of signs. Nearly every brick and mortar business has a lit sign that marks their place in the world. A properly maintained electric sign is an essential advertising and communication tool.  Whether you are a sign company or a regular business, you need to think about retrofitting neon and fluorescent signs to LED.

Your Sign as a Marketing Tool

In the modern age of digital marketing, views cost your business as much as $4 per click (or even more). Many businesses happily pay $1 per click just to have their website seen by a prospect.
Think about how valuable that makes your sign.
Every time someone drives by and sees your sign (especially in the evenings), it is the brick and mortar marketing equivalent to a “click.”
Consider how many people pass your business in a given day. How many of those people pass more than once?
Even small, suburban communities will see as many as 41,000 vehicles pass a given location on a daily basis (See Ohio.gov Traffic Volume Report). If your business is in a larger community, you should be seeing thousands more passers by every day.
Think about the fact that by having a quality sign your business is getting a few thousand dollars worth of advertising every day!
This means three things are critical for your business when it comes to your sign:
  1. It has to look great.
  2. It has to be maintained.
  3. It has to be cost effective.

The True Cost Of Your Neon or Fluorescent Sign

The world was so much easier when we didn’t think about how much things cost. When we were kids, we didn’t think about how much it cost our parents when we left the hallway light on all night (We just wanted the comfort of the lights being on after scaring ourselves watching Stephen King’s “IT.”)
But, as business owners, we care about how much the lights cost. The energy bill for my business is a lot scarier to me than any sewer clown Stephen King’s mind can conjure!
I know it’s scary, but you need to think about the true cost of operating your sign, and it’s worse than you think.
First, there’s the energy. With a small sign, you may only be paying about 20¢ per day. Multiple or larger signs take that price up some. Depending on your business, you may only be paying a few hundred or a few thousand dollars per year in energy to “keep the sign on.”
However the cost of energy is seldom the real issue.

Maintenance becomes a problem for most businesses.

You are in the business of making money. The last thing you want to do is spend money and time (which we all know means more money) repairing your signs.
Let’s assume nothing goes wrong with your sign this year. Paying your staff to fix the sign will cost you in labor and parts. Since most fluorescent and neon signs require 2-3 maintenance cycles per year, a lot of companies opt to ignore their signs.
This works for a little while until your light becomes clouded and dim and generally makes your business look bad.
Have you ever noticed that in the movies when they want to show that a business is in disrepair or disrepute, they always show a flickering neon sign? That’s because signage is the primary way consumers judge a brick and mortar business location.
They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but statistics show that most people do. The same is true of signs. Your sign is the “book cover” to your business, and people are judging you for it.
Making sure your sign looks great and stays low cost is essential.

How Do I Keep My Sign Looking Great Without Paying for Maintenance 3 Times Per Year?

The simple answer is, “Retrofit your flourescent or neon sign to LED.” We all know LED is one of the most energy efficient and lowest maintenance options for lighting. However, few business owners think about the possibilities for their neon and fluorescent signage.
Not only can you save energy, but you can also reduce your maintenance cycles from two or three per year to one every five to ten years!
In addition to keeping your sign looking great without a lot of maintenance or repair visits from sign companies and electricians, the job can be done in a few minutes without an outside professional!

PartsForSign.com has neon and fluorescent to LED retrofit kits!
